After a 14 years hiatus, the Incredibles are back. Time may have moved on for us, but Incredibles 2 picks up where its predecessor left off, with Mr Incredible/Bob Parr (Craig T Nelson), Elasti Girl/Helen (Holly Hunter) and their children Viola, "Dash" and baby Jack-Jack battling villains whilst trying to lead normal lives. After superheroes are declared illegal, salvation and advocacy comes in the unlikely form of corporate sponsorship. As a result, insurance risk and potential walking PR disaster Bob is left being the homemaker whilst efficient and frankly alarmingly MILFY Helen earns big-bucks fighting crime and fronting the campaign.

Challenges abound for Elasti Girl, but Mr Incredible's struggles on the home front come across just as heroic. He battles through fatigue to solve Dash's maths homework, Viola's boy problems and contain the dangerous and ever evolving, albeit adorable, super powers of Jack-Jack, all in order to let Helen commit full time to her super hero work. The movie skillfully transitions between Bob's domestic tribulations and Helen's battles on the street, where she is faced with the enigmatic nemesis, Screenslaver, who achieves his nefarious goals by hypnotising anyone who gazes at a screen (namely, all of us).

It's a scenario that reflects writer and director Brad Bird's proficiency at locating the essence of a story and his belief that disconnection between people is the worst type of villainy. Wholehearted and delightful, Incredibles 2 emphasizes that heroism is rooted in the everyday, in our a simple willingness to connect and understand each other, or simply keep a family together.
